10 Fashion Styles: Which one is you?

Fashion styles are constantly evolving, but there are certain trends that appear over and over again on runways and in street style. The more we learn about the different fashion styles that influence popular trends the easier and quicker it will be to find our OWN personal style!

If there is one thing that is constant, it is change. And change is exactly the one thing that is constant when it comes to fashion. Since the beginning of human civilization, there has been a constant effort being put to make one look better. The different styles in fashion have always gone through innumerable changes. With the increase in the amount of innovations, the change in trend and fashion styles have also been rapid. So keeping that in mind, here is the list of a few fashion styles that have been accepted throughout:


#1 Vintage


One of the most adorable fashion styles, it definitely is a blast from the past. From flapper dresses to pinup clothing and from retro swimwear to indie clothing, the vintage look is a culmination of fashion from the 20’s to the 70’s. It is the one trend that overcame the test of time.

Vintage clothing can be haute couture or quality mainstream fashion labels; it can be used, new (from deadstock), manufactured, or handmade. It is important to understand that the definition of vintage is fluid, so every decade brings forth new items that fit into this category. It is also important to understand that all vintage will eventually become antique — clothing 100 years old or more is classified as antique.


#2 Bohemian


The best way to describe bohemian would be to use the word non-traditional. A style which is similar to arty, bohemian style uses extravagant and wild patterns on exotic textures. It can be characterized as an inspiration from gypsy and hippie looks. It is more commonly referred to as ‘Boho’.

Bohemian style is a fashion style strongly related to hippie fashion, in which natural fabrics, retro patterns, neutrals and warm shades merge with 70s style accents and a flair for statement accessories. It is more than just a fashion trend – it’s an actual culture in its own right, one that comes with a very specific ideology and complicated history. While it’s closely associated with the hippie fashions of the 60s and 70s, these days, bohemian fashion is part of the mainstream culture. But fact is, boho fashion actually started out as a counterculture back in the 19th century. Today, the wide variety of boho clothing and accessories make the style an actual phenomenon, one that follows the lines of effortless, relaxed fashion, with its loose-fitted clothing items, casual accessories and overall artistic, creative mishmash of elements.


#3 Chic


Chic is characterized by being trendy and fashionable. It is a type of statement to make oneself look smart and striking. Whoever follows this style makes sure to choose well tailored stylish designs that are pretty classy. Strong colors which are not extravagant, comes as a part of the chic style. It is something that relates to being casual in not so casual way. If you are part of this style, your wardrobe is a symbol of style.

The Chic Style is known for wearing monochromatic ensembles and pieces with sleek clean lines—it exudes power and has an innate sense of fashion. As a Chic Style type, you often choose clothing in black, white, and neutrals, saving color for a bold statement accessory such as an alligator skin purse or a bright red lipstick. In your wardrobe you’ll find sleek, modern shapes and of-the-moment accessories. A little black dress is always a staple, as is a little white dress. Accessories and outerwear are where it gets adventurous, favoring a sharp coat with a boxy silhouette and stylish, minimalist jewelry such as a slim choker or a single sculptural cuff.


#4 Artsy


Artsy as the names suggests, invokes the independent creativity of the person. These are usually the ones who want to make a statement of their own by the clothes they wear. Most of the times, they are the creators of their own fashion style. They do not follow the traditional norms and make the path for themselves. The unconventional for of art leads to innovating very many interesting forms of trends which are not restricted by the usual textbook nature of creating fashion.

This fashion style is as it suggests, surrounding the creation of an individual. Women who tend to dress in this style are often drawn towards items that are hand crafted, or particularly unique. This trend stays away from conventional fashion styles and resembles the fashion sense of a creative thinker who wants to make a statement. The beauty of this fashion style that it is different depending on the women, a style with ultimate freedom.


#5 Sexy


It is all about showing off your best features. Let all the best things about you out there to get the attention of male. Mostly accompanied by heels, shorts or tight skirts, this style leaves the bare minimum for imagination. Exposure is to be at the maximum and as much as skin is shown. Tight fitting tops are chosen to show off the features like breasts and stomach. This is the type of fashion which is not every woman’s cup of tea. You got a lot of guts to pull off this one.

However, one of the biggest fashion mistakes women make when they’re aiming for a sexy style is to reveal too much skin. If you plan on flaunting your top half, make sure your bottom half is covered up and vice versa. You only need to focus on one body part at a time. Show off your best assets and keep the rest covered up in style.

Being able to get in touch with your feminine side is so important. Don’t be afraid to opt for prints and cute dresses. Above all else however, you need to make sure you express your own personal style.


#6 Casual


Casual is a combination of elegance with comfort. This simple style has caught up well with the passage of time and is one of the most sought after fashion styles as of now. None of the exotic and bold items will be in the wardrobe of a woman who follows casual fashion. They would prefer to put on a white T-Shirt and black pants over tight and uncomfortable exotics any day. They tend to keep it simple and match the accessories with whatever the simple clothing they are wearing.


#7 Sophisticated


The people who prefer this are the ones who require everything at best quality. Nothing satisfies them if it is not worth the trouble. They often look for styles that make a statement on the quality, polished manner and culture. Most of them are the ones who are from higher status and are also in a way related to how a businesswoman would dress up. Sophisticated can be characterized as businesswoman minus the formal look. Culture and luxury mean the most to the people who choose this style of fashion.

When you think of sophistication what words spring to mind? Worldly, refined, elegant, current, calm, grown-up, confident? It’s these adjectives that help you gain insight and direction to achieve the look.

When it comes to sophistication, err on the side of caution. The surest way to achieve real sophistication is to be modest yet chic. Look for modest necklines and hem lengths and fits that are not too revealing. When you want to wear a short mini skirt covering your legs with dark tights will instantly elevate the look. In general the more covered you are the more likely you are to be moving in the right direction.


#8 Tomboy


Basically for the ones who do not want to be dressed like a woman. They do not abide by the usual norms of what a woman should wear. To put it lightly, they prefer black over pink. Most of their clothing are a bit baggy and focuses more on graphic T-Shirts and Shirts from the boy’s selection. They do not prefer light colors and frills or laces. It can ask so be described as simple and modern. A boyish look is what they prefer over the classy, elegant looks.

Tomboy fashion has changed a great deal over the years. Once upon a time, if you had an inkling that you were into more masculine clothing, you'd have two options: actually wearing men's garments or settling for some pretty below-par "mannish" staples like baggy boyfriend jeans or boxy shirts. These days, though, stealing from the boys has become an artform—both in terms of womenswear designers creating more and more female figure–friendly menswear-inspired garb and in terms of the rules of styling them.


#9 Rocker


Vintage T-Shirts, ripped jeans and leather jacket – three words that describe the rocker look. It is one of the most versatile styles of fashion which keeps changing depending on the genre of music, the band and the person who chooses to wear it. Be it heavy metal giant Megadeth’s T-Shirt or grunge rockers Nirvana’s hoodie, the selection seems to be uncountable. There are no baggy apparels in this style. Most of the clothes chosen are a tad bit smaller in size. It all depends on the wearer and what music they love and support.

In 2020 rocker girl style is cool, leaving grunge behind and re-inventing itself as sexy and stylish : rocker-chic! Grab yourself a statement piece – say a leather bomber or cropped fringe jacket – and team with black skinnies or ripped jeans, finished with platforms, sneakers or ankle boots. Studded footwear and bags are must-haves. Pull on with tight black pants and a slouchy tee, or use to play down the girlishness of a floaty dress, actually it makes it look more feminine.


#10 Preppy


The college look would be the tag most suitable for the preppy look. The collared T-Shirts are matched and A-line skirts are matched with girly blouses that are lined up in their wardrobe. A cute little headband and geeky glasses mostly do accompany with this style. The geeky look might seem to be an expensive style, but it is not required to shell out much to get this look as it is not that luxurious.

Three words that sum up preppy style: crisp, clean, and classy. For outfits that appear simple, there are a lot of things you need to consider in order to pull off an effortlessly classic style.

Feminine, delicate, and flowy blouses are a staple in preppy fashion. You can find them in long- and short-sleeve, patterned and plain, colorful and subdued, etc. Essentially, you can always find a way to fit a blouse into your outfit.

While white, black, navy and nude are the most common colors for preppy clothing, patterns play a key role in preppy outfits. Stripes, polka dots, plaid, and florals are all common patterns seen on tops, pants, skirts, and accessories. Look for dresses with all over patterns to go bold with your patterned style. Or, combine a patterned cardigan, blouse, or accessory with mostly plain and clean colors to create the perfect balance.
